Radiation fallout is defined as radioactive material that is carried by wind until it settles to earth. You can’t see, feel or smell it. With the disaster in Japan, many people are concerned about protection against radiation. At the time of writing of this article, experts said there is no cause for alarm in this part of the continent. Despite that, it is good to get equipped with some knowledge.
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF RADIATION?
There are two types of radiation – ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation.
The ionizing radiation is more damaging because of its higher energy than non-ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation produces charged (positive or negative) particles. Ionizing radiation is produced from nuclear bombs, nuclear reactors, medical and dental x-rays.
Non-ionizing radiation includes electromagnetic radiation produced by electric current, radio waves, microwave ovens, radar stations, television (cathode ray tube), high voltage lines and cell phones.
EFFECTS OF RADIATION ON HUMAN BODY
Radiation affects cells in the body – When the human body is exposed to radioactive particles (e.g. Iodine-131, Cesium-134, Strontium-90), cell atoms are damaged, causing cell death and changes (mutations)to DNA (blueprint for cells). Gene mutation is considered to be one of the causes future development of cancer cells, birth defects and other life threatening health problems. Damaged cells and genes can also prevent normal function of body tissues and organs, causing various diseases.
